In April 2009, the first FDA clearance was granted for using a diode laser for temporary relief of muscle and joint pain and stiffness, arthritis pain or muscle spasm, the temporary increase in local blood circulation and/or promoting relaxation of muscle.
Although national and international organizations exist for the advancement of laser therapy for wound healing and pain relief, and it is quite commonplace in chiropractic and sports medicine, generally speaking, this is still an unknown treatment regimen in dentistry. This presentation will provide an overview of the science behind pain relief using diode lasers.
Christopher J. Walinski, DDS has been an author, instructor and innovator in laser dentistry for more than a decade. His 2003 text on WaterLase dentistry has been re-published in over ten languages. In addition, Dr. Walinski has published numerous peer-reviewed laser and oral-systemic articles in peer-reviewed journals worldwide.
Dr. Walinski is a Diplomate and Past-President of the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry, and at one time, was the only American representative on the Editorial Board for the International Society for Oral Laser Applications in Vienna, Austria. He was a Founder of, and has achieved Master recognition from the WCLI, and has Laser Certifications through the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He maintains a private practice in San Diego and is Adjunct Professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in the Department of Primary Care. Most recently, he brings his unique combination of dental, marketing and laser experience to the WCLI Institute as the Executive Director.
